More than 7500 athletes with intellectual disabilities came together to compete in the 2019 Special Olympics World Games held in Abu Dhabi in the Arab Emirates from 14‒22 March to represent 190-plus countries in 24 sports, in an event aimed at fostering a more understanding and inclusive world.
Australia was represented by 105 athletes who competed across 11 sports: athletics, basketball, bocce, bowling, equestrian, football, golf, gymnastics, sailing, swimming and tennis. They were supported by 35 volunteer officials.
Gallagher takes care of the insurance needs of Special Olympics Australia and in the United States the company also got behind the US team to raise funds to send five athletes to compete, with a total of US$30,000.
Our Australian athletes achieved an impressive medal tally: 42 gold, 44 silver and 55 bronze, but everyone was a winner when it came to uniting to represent their country through teamwork and with pride. Results for all categories and divisions, where athletes compete according to their level of ability, can be viewed on the 2019 Special Olympics World Games website.
“Congratulations to the winners,” says Gallagher Australia’s National Head of Sport Steve Van Leeuwen, “and to all of Team Australia who have risen above personal challenges to represent our country. Gallagher is proud to be associated with you and with this event.” Special Olympics provides year-round sports training and competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities by giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community.
