Expanding not for profit opts for Gallagher disability sector expertise

Published 14 September 2021

The ability to deliver a smooth transition from one funding model to another was the decisive factor in Gallagher winning a major disability sector account as its insurance provider, and our past experience in the industry and logistical capability to support expansion strengthened our case.

The Victoria-based not for profit client is now the biggest disability service provider in Australia, with plans to expand into New South Wales and South Australia, and needed an insurance broker with an understanding of how to seamlessly move them from their current government funded program to the private sector, and a different funding model.

Gallagher has had disability clients previously so the tendering team included key people who had worked with other similar organisations, including Senior Account Executive Gail Murray who has past experience with the national peak body for provider organisations.

“I learned about the sector and its unique risks through direct experience and extracurricular activities like sitting in on conferences,” she says, “so we were able to build rapport with the client by showing that we knew what they were doing and had worked with other disability services organisations.”

In addition to managing the two different funding models another complexity in the client’s requirements was that some of their partner organisations were no longer eligible for government funded insurance and would consequently need to arrange for private cover individually.

“What they wanted was a broker who knew and understood the cover available under the government funded model and could duplicate that coverage in the current insurance market,” Murray says.

All this needed to be consolidated into a comprehensive and cohesive program.

Meeting the disability service provider’s insurance wish list

Some of the other factors that put Gallagher ahead of the competition:

Improved motor vehicle cover – we achieved this by consolidating the organisation’s fragmented, mismatched and not entirely appropriate policies into a more uniform and cost effective program which included a under-excess claims solution through Gallaher Bassett to enable no-delay repairs. Since this represented the greatest number of claims we also offered more effective control via monthly claims reports to enable clearer tracking.

Claims handling experience in sensitive liability matters ‒ with prior experience of Royal Commission issues such as sexual abuse we were able to assure the client that they would have our expertise and support – they wouldn’t be left without advice.

Positioning to enable national expansion ‒ in line with the organisation’s plans to extend its services to other states Gallagher can offer a network of people able to provide immediate support on the ground, through local presence via the Gallagher branch network.

Our longstanding code of conduct ‒ the Gallagher Way aligned philosophically with the not for profit’s ethics charter and business practice.

Broad scope of risk management expertise ‒ we can advise best practices to be applied across various workplaces and through mergers and acquisitions to assist organisation growth.
Innovative thinking with policies tailored to present and future needs ‒ we were able to show awareness of how their business plan and insurance program need to work together to accommodate future growth.

“It took a lot of work behind the scenes to consolidate a solution,” Murray says. Crucially the Gallagher team’s strength in placements and tendering, superior service levels and speed of response to feedback demonstrated the qualities the client was seeking.
